Reel to Reel Moldings - Greater Convenience and Lower Costs for Small Components

Reel to reel molding, or strip molding, is used to mold plastic parts that require sequential and automatic assembly but are difficult to orient or align.

Kamek uses its expertise in tool design, equipment, and micromolding techniques to produce such sequential parts in one unit, all meeting original specifications.

This complexity of this process means that few plastic injection molding companies have the necessary skills to manufacture these products.

Benefits of Reel to Reel Molding

At one time small components that combine metal and plastic parts would have been assembled individually, an inefficient and time-consuming process.

Reel to reel molding allows Kamek to automate the production of these tiny parts, resulting in many benefits for you:

We can send parts to you on a reel, ready for automated assembly. The reel ensures consistent alignment and orientation of parts.

  • Inserts are loaded automatically into our plastic injection molding machines, meaning less labor and lower costs for you.
  • The process creates a greater volume of parts for less.
  • There is less chance for error because the strip molding process is inherently repeatable.
  • Stamping can be done in-line, reducing costs.

How Reel to Reel Molding Works

Reel to reel molding is a versatile technology that allows for great precision in the manufacture of tiny components. It is especially useful for the electronics industry.

The process involves two reels – a feed reel and take-up reel.

A continuous carrier strip containing a line of parts is indexed and fed from the feed reel through the injection molding machine.

Plastic is molded over the parts on the strip and the strip is fed onto the take-up reel.

In general, there are three types of carrier media used in the continuous insert molding mechanism:

  • metal stamping or lead frame,
  • mylar tape
  • or molded carrier strip.

With this diversity of media, reel to reel molding allows us to create a wide assortment of parts combining different materials.

We deliver the parts to you on the take-up reel, ready for insertion into your automated assembly line, or in single parts.
